My name is Alicia Álvarez, and I work as personal assistant since year 2000. I worked before also at administrative tasks for other 9 years, since 1991.
In May 2017 I became member of IMA Spain. I heard about the association by a colleague from my company, who works in Denmark. At that year, in September, I attended my first Annual Conference in The Hague, and I was pleasantly surprised because of the great professionalism and extent of IMA. In the Hague I met other members from IMA Spain and understood much better how the association is and how can I benefit from it. At the same time also, I realized that with my experience I can also share my knowledge and receive other knowledges from different ways of working. IMA is such a wide international association that can offers a network spread around Europe and now also in South Africa. With this good impression, the National Chairman, Anna M. Hueto, explained me that the Treasurer position was vacant and maybe I could be interested in it. I though about it during some days, and I decided to took part more actively, from the Council, like Treasurer, and accepted the challenge.
IMA convenes 2 events every year, one in Spring and in Autumn, the Training Day and the Annual Conference respectively, with the same topic. The topic of this year 2018 is “The Digital Age”
I have participated this year at both, the Training Day was held in Barcelona, in April 2018, which was a big success.
The 44th Annual Conference was held in Frankfurt from 24th October to 27th. I enjoyed a lot those days with some many assistants from different countries. We were 5 in total from Spain. A small number, because we are only 25 members. The Conference is not only a training and learning day, but a very good opportunity to meet other colleagues from the profession and learn from them and make good relationships among us. The Conference started on Friday at 09.30 and finished at 17.15 h. The total of participants was 6, the Conference facilitator, 4 speakers and a sponsor one. The length of every participant was maximum one hour, which allows the conference to be very nimbly, and no bored at all. Mainly after lunch, when everybody gets a bit sleepy.
The speakers, in order of appearance were: Veronica Cochran, CEO International Association of Administrative Professionals Marc Peters, CTO Energy, IBM Nicole Dufft, Partner & Co-Founder Fibonacci & Friends Lucy Brazier, CEO Marchan Publishing
The start was explosive with Veronica, plenty of energy, and very good communicator. The general impression around the participants were better than good and was chosen as the favorite one. Marc Peters showed us a video about some environmental projects of his company. Nicole Dufft brought us a bit of fun, with some piece of empathy and mindfulness.
And finally, Lucy Brazier, who is well-known in IMA, as collaborator also, arrived for encouraging us in our profession, and empower us, because we cannot be replaced by any machine.
Furthermore, the Conference Facilitator was Michael Belfuss, and Silem Melis from Thalys, presented his Company. Both worth mentioning, as they did it very well.
Summarizing, a good Conference, with good teachings. Happy to have been there!!, and happy to go on with next participations!!!
